It looks like Ward Churchill’s lawsuit may cost him far more than it paid.
The Denver Post reports today [1]that the University of Colorado “is seeking to recover more than $52,000 from Ward Churchill for costs the school incurred fighting a lawsuit filed by the former ethnic-studies professor.”
Earlier this year the former ethnic-studies professor lost his suit calling for damages and a return to his professorship at the UC Boulder, receiving instead a nominal $1 in damages from the jury. However, Judge Larry Naves then “vacated” the jury’s verdict, claiming that the Colorado Regents, which acted as a “quasi-judicial entity,” is immune to any lawsuit from Churchill regardless of any First Amendment implications.
Churchill technically owes his own attorney about $1.2 million in fees, but won’t necessarily have to pay up, according to the Denver Post [2] .
