Liberal Media Gets the Boot at the Pentagon

The Trump administration continued its shakeup since assuming control last month with the announcement that four liberal media news outlets would lose their coveted office space at the Pentagon to mostly Trump-friendly organizations.

In a memo issued by Department of Defense spokesman John Ullyot, NBC News, The New York Times, Politico and National Public Radio (NPR) were told that they need to vacate their office space by Feb. 14.

Ullyott said the move is part of a new annual media rotation program designed to allow access by “a new outlet from the same medium that has not had the unique opportunity to report as a resident member of the Pentagon press corps.”

The New York Post will replace the Times as a print outlet, Breitbart News will take NPR’s place as a radio outlet, One America News (OAN) will replace NBC News as a cable outlet, and HuffPost will take Politico’s spot even though they don’t have a Pentagon correspondent.

The Pentagon Press Association board, which represents journalists covering military affairs, criticized the decision.

“We are greatly troubled by this unprecedented move by DOD to single out highly professional media who have covered the Pentagon for decades, under both Republican and Democratic administrations,” the board said in a statement.

“We have asked for a meeting and will keep everyone informed.”

The move is similar to what the first Trump administration did with the White House press briefings when they reshuffled the seating order to give smaller news outlets a chance to ask questions and take part more fully in the briefings.
