Student Allowed to Reference the Bible in Speech after University Administrators Initially Banned It

Colorado Mesa University initially told nursing student, Karissa Erikson, to not include any references to the Bible and Jesus Christ in her speech at a nursing program pinning ceremony. The university told Erikson that the “speeches should be free of any one religious slant.” She was allegedly threatened with “repercussions” and that the nursing program “will not tolerate” Christian content.

However, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) sent a letter to university administrators instructing them that their ban on free speech violated the student’s constitutional rights. The university reversed its decision on the content of Erikson’s speech.
