A university we have long been critical of—Duke—recently got together with the Washington University of St. Louis and Turbo Tax to do something useful. They are developing prompts that can be included in tax preparation packages that will give the poor the chance to put part of their refund into a savings account.

Krista Holub, the Program manager of the Center for Social Development at Washington University, explained the program in an appearance at the Center for American Progress today. She helped develop the program. She had previously worked with the Asset-Building Research Group at the University of North Carolina.
