The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is upset at apparent attempts by the Trump Administration to change the vocabulary of federal employees, such as doctors and staff at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Hank Reichman draws on a story which appeared in The Washington Post to show us how the new linguistic landscape at the CDC has changed. “The forbidden terms are ‘vulnerable,’ ‘entitlement,’ ‘diversity,’ ‘transgender,’ ‘fetus,’ ‘evidence-based’ and ‘science-based,’” Reichman claims on the academe blog maintained by the AAUP. With the exception of the last two, which barely receive lip service in academe, if the Modern Language Association (MLA) adopted the same standard at it’s annual convention of English professors, the number of MLA panels crammed into four days would dwindle from 700 to seven.
